The University of Akureyri (Háskólinn á Akureyri) is a public, fully accredited higher education institution established in 1987.

​

The University is located in the capital of north Iceland and has served Akureyri and its rural surrounding for more than 30 years. While building a reputation for academic excellence and good industrial relations, the university has been instrumental in the area’s economic growth and is central in the area’s future planning as a knowledge-based society.

​

The University , which offers  campus-based and online instruction  in Icelandic and  in English, currently has 2500 students registered in programmes in Social Sciences, Media Studies, Nursing, Paramedics, Occupational Therapy, Teacher Training (pre-school and primary school), Biotechnology, Law, Police Science, Modern Studies, Psychology, Fishery Studies, Computer Science and Business Administration.

Graduate programmes are offered in the health Sciences, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Law and Natural Resource Studies. In 2019 UNAK completed its educational cycle by offering doctoral studies.

​

Host of the Northern Research Forum, the University of Akureyri research focuses primarily on arctic issues.
